MIND says 1 in 3 people find work life stressful and it is acknowledged that it is sometimes difficult to keep the balance right in terms of work, play and lifestyle.
Psychologist Dr Jessamy Hibberd explains, “Stress triggers the fight or flight response, secreting adrenaline and cortisol into the blood. When this happens regularly it can leave you in a state of ongoing tension causing nausea, constipation, sleep problems and weight gain.”
Helping to raise awareness of the numerous solutions that are available to achieve this balance is an important one. Organizations and businesses are being asked to support people in developing resilience to stress by raising awareness and improving education.
For more information about dealing with stress, why not attend a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England workshop? Visit www.mind.org.uk/work, encourage your employers to sign the Time to Change pledge on the Mind website or take a look at the International Stress Management Association website (ISMA) www.isma.org.uk. Alternatively, treat yourself to some “me-time” or book yourselves a spa day.
